Any budding bedroom DJ or someone more advanced will no doubt listen to electronic music producers such as Diplo.
But have you ever thought about the time and effort, as well as the hardware and software, that is used to create each of his songs?
Diplo is the co-creator of Major Lazer and is an accomplished American producer.DJ and songwriter.
In this article, I am going to be answering the question of what DAW software does Diplo use, as well as looking at his chosen plugins.
What DAW Software Does Diplo Use in 2020?
To kick things off, Diplo uses mostly Native Instruments KOMPLETE bundled with either Ableton, Cubase, or Pro Tools.
Now, I’m not going to talk about the DAW in that much detail in this article.
Suffice to say, check out the same DAW that Diplo uses if you want a complete DAW package.
Instead, I am going to look at the plugins that Diplo uses to craft his songs and sounds.
What VST Plugins Does Diplo Use in 2020?
UAD – FATSO
Diplo, supposedly, uses this plugin on vocals, instruments and drums.
It brings out the warmth in the sound of anything you run through it.
Other famous musicians such as Brendan O’Brien, Ed Cherney and Al Schmitt also use this plugin.
Universal Audio Roland RE-201 – Delay Plugin
This is a plugin that always gets great reviews.
You can hear what this plugin can do on the track ‘Get Free’.
The choppy and skipping vocals towards the end of the track were processed using the Roland RE-201 Space Echo and many layers of compression and resampling to get the effect you hear.
Universal Audio Studer A800 Multichannel Tape Recorder
This plugin is the one you want to use if you want two-inch fat sound.
He has entire channels as part of his workflow that is made up of UAD plugins.
He uses these to break out instruments or to inspire their sound as part of the creation process.
Diplo is very enthusiastic about UAD plugins and admits he has barely scratched the surface of what is on offer.
He looks to other users of UAD plugins for little tips and tricks that he can use himself in his tracks.
When it comes to analog sound or reproduction, he tends to work with Ariel Rechtshaid, who is experienced in this field, having worked with Justin Bieber, No Doubt and Major Lazer amongst others.
Diplo has been trying out this plugin in combination with the Ampex ATR-102 Mastering Tape Recorder plugin.
Universal Audio Teletronix LA-3A Classic Audio Leveler Plugin
This is a VST plugin that is an audio leveler.
It has a lot of features and many of them are expanded, such as the original High-Frequency Emphasis filter and digital-only parallel processing for wet/dry mixes.
The main thing you need to know about this plugin is that it is a powerful compressor.
iZotope Stutter Edit
This is one of several plugins on my list where Diplo is mentioned on the official website as a user.
He uses the stutter edit feature on everything with this plugin, meaning drums, synths, effects, vocals, guitar and the like.
UAD – 1176 Classic Limiter Plugin Collection
The 1176 Compressor is a software plugin that recreates the famous 1176 Compressor hardware.
This is the same compressor that has been used in countless hit songs.
This is a great plugin that has fantastic reviews across the board.
Because it so popular and powerful it makes sense that a producer with the talents of Diplo would be making use of it.
Waves CLA Vocals
This is a great plugin to use when working with vocals.
But then you probably guessed that from the name.
It allows you to mix and tweak vocals to get it just right on your track.
You can hear what the plugin can do at around 3:00 minutes into the song ‘Where Are U Now’ from Justin Bieber, Diplo and Skrillex.
Izotope Ozone 6
Ozone 6 from Izotope is a widely used plugin inside most producer’s toolkit.
Many producers use this, including Skrillex and Martin Garrix to name but two.
Look either of them up on YouTube and listen to their sound to get an idea of what this plugin can do.
UAD – Pultec Passive EQ Plug-In Collection
The aim of this plugin and why it was built was to recreate the Pultec EQ experience plugins.
This plugin is one that brings out the vintage sound in anything you pass through it.
So, if you want something modern that also sounding classic then you should all this plugin to your production arsenal.
Dada Life Sausage Fattener Plugin
This plugin wins the award in my article for the plugin with the best name.
It’s designed to make a track sound fatter and Diplo is such a fan of this he is listed as a user on its website.
Xfer – Serum
This is a plugin that Diplo always mentions as being one of his favorites.
It’s great if you like dubstep or techno, even the default presets allow you to create something that sounds great.
Sonic Charge Bitspeek
This plugin is a real-time voice changer.
It’s a plugin that Diplo heavily used 5-6 years ago for the drops in his songs.
I mentioned it in this article anyway, even if Diplo may no longer be using it.
Native Instruments – Massive Synth
It doesn’t matter what music genre you create music in or what you like.
With this plugin, you can always produce a decent quality sound, thanks to the presets that are on offer.
Versatility is the name of the game with this plugin and is why a producer like Diplo is attracted to it.
FabFilter Pro-L Limiter Plugin
FabFilter has a collection of great plugins.
Pro-L is a powerful limiter.
It’s used by a ton of popular producers and one of those is Diplo which is why it’s on my list here.
Output – EXHALE
This plugin has a fantastic GUI.
It’s also another one where, on the official plugin website, Diplo is listed as an artist who uses it.
Lennar Digital – Sylenth1
This is another common plugin that every producer has.
Massive Synth and iZotope are others.
With this plugin being so popular you can understand why Diplo also uses it.
LOUDPVCK: SOUNDPVCKS – VOL ONE
This plugin is part of Splice Sounds if you want to get your hands on it.
It’s also one that Diplo is known to use.
Dada Life Endless Smile
Here’s another plugin with a great name.
You use it to build up anticipation in the song before you drop it.
As with many plugins on my list already, Diplo is mentioned on the plugin website as one of its users.
I hope you enjoyed this article and that it gave you a peek into the software that a renowned music producer such as Diplo uses to create tracks.
Hopefully, it may even inspire you to take the plunge and to try creating some beats for yourself.
With this DAW and plugins, you are going to be on the right track
