6 Best Free Drum Samples, Drum Kits and Drum VSTs of 2020 [Updated]

Aren’t you glad we live in a world where you can use virtual instruments to aid your music creation?

In this article, I will list down some of the best drum samples and VSTs that will assist you in your music production journey.

If you are a songwriter, you can create full-length songs with drums without having to mic-in real acoustic drums.

You probably know that recording acoustic drums requires a lot of work, time, skill, and equipment.

Before we dive into the list, I want to take a moment to mention what I think is the best acoustic drum VST I have ever used.

MT Power DrumKit 2 this drum kit has it all.

You can choose one of the amazing presets and samples to build the whole drum track for the entire song.

Editing the presets is also an option if you want to get more creative.

You can also use the kit and program a MIDI track, and the best thing about this kit is the sound.

Plus, it is FREE and works with both Mac and PC.

Benefits of Using Drum Software

6 Best Free Drum Samples, Drum Kits and Drum VSTs

There are tons of benefits to using a drum generator VST, let’s take a look at them:

You Only Need Your Computer

When recording a drum track using samples and VSTs, you do not need a drum kit, mics, a drummer; you only need a computer (recording with E-drums is also a good option).

Less Noise

By using drum VSTs for recording a drum track, you can create drum tracks any time of the day without disturbing your neighbors.

Just plug in a set of headphones, and you’re good to go.

You Don’t Need to Be a Sound Engineer

When using virtual drum kits, you don’t need to know much about how to record drums with a microphone.

Tweaking and editing the sound is all you need to do at times, which is not that hard to master.

Saves you Time and Money

The best benefit of using drum VSTs for me is that it saves you a lot of time and money.

Without using any expensive equipment like microphones, you save a lot of money and time.

Although there are free drum kits you can take advantage of, it is hard to find one that boasts high quality.

Don’t worry about finding FREE drum samples and VSTs, because I got that part covered.

Let’s move on to the list of the best free drum samples, drum VSTs, and drum kits.

First, let’s start with the best free acoustic drum samples:

MT Power DrumKit 2

MT Power DrumKit 2 - best free drum vst plugin with free acoustic drum samples and loops

The MT Power DrumKit 2 is one of my favorites.

I use a lot of drum VSTs, but I always come back to the MT Power DrumKit 2, especially when recording rock, jazz, and instrumental music.

What I like most about this drum kit is that it comes with a lot of presets that you can mix and match to create an entire song.

It comes with intros, fills, and some of the syncopated beats that I like. Aside from all that, it sounds terrific.

Being mix-ready, you do not need to do a lot of tweaking to get them to sound right.

It does have an option to change the velocity so that you can create dynamic drum tracks for your song.

This drum kit sounds like authentic organic drums, and you wouldn’t notice the difference when you produce a record.

The MT Power DrumKit 2 is free and available for both Mac and PC.

AVL Drumkits by Bandshed Records

AVL Drumkits - free metal drum samples and kits

The AVL Drum Kit was sampled by a talented sound engineer who also happens to be a drummer.

It consists of two different kits with 5 velocity layers per piece.

These kits sound really good for a free drum VST, and it does not take a lot of memory space.

I recommend this kit for beginner producers using old computers with low memory.

I should mention that the name of the 2 kits is Red Zeppelin and Black Pearl, which is probably a reference to the band and the brand of drums used to record these samples.

The sound is pretty unique, and you could use them for some of your songs, but don’t forget to give credit to the developers.

Sean Pandy Drums

Sean Pandy Drums - free drum kit wav samples for hip hop

This free drum kit hosted by chokehold.net is another fantastic organic drum kit that shines most for creating natural drum sounds.

I recommend this drum kit for producing rock and metal tracks.

It is simple enough to use, and it does not have a lot of bells and whistles, but it does have the best quality for a free VST.

The kit includes a kick, snare, 4 toms, and a sub blower.

Some drum samples will not sound good when programming fast note repetitions, but not the Sean Pandy Drum Kit.

Because it does get a machine gun effect, it is fantastic for metal music producers when programming blast beats and fast double bass sections.

This drum kit works for Mac and PC.

The 60s Rogers Pop Kit by Drum Drops

The 60s Rogers Pop Kit by Drum Drops - free drum vst plugin for drum loops and presets

This drum kit is a virtual take on retro-sounding drums.

If you want to create tracks that take you back to the 60s or the New Wave era, you need to check this drum kit out.

It is based on the Rogers brand of drums that were popular back in the 50s.

These drums sound very unique and versatile and used by big band and swing drummers.

Famous musicians such as Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson used these drums, and now you can too. (in digital form)

I really liked how authentic the kit sounds, and I genuinely recommend this kit to music producers who want to add a different sound to their tracks.

Here is one of the best electronic drum samples for beatmakers:

The GarageBand Drum Collection

The GarageBand Drum Collection - best drum samples and kits for windows and mac os

Before I started downloading and exploring different drum kits online, I spent countless hours producing with GarageBand’s free drum collection.

This collection is massive and comes with tons of different kits and sounds.

If you are a beginner or pro-Mac user, you may want to check the GarageBand sound library.

This library consists of different acoustic kits, 808s, trap drum kits, world kits, and percussion.

It also comes with AI drummers that automatically fill a track in different styles.

Some people say that GarageBand is for beginners, but you can still produce high-quality records with this DAW.

Producers such as Steve Lacey use GarageBand (on iOS) to produce tracks for Kendrick Lamar.

Think about that!
