Can you DJ with a Chromebook? [Well, Sort Of]

If you are new to DJing and wondering what gear you need to start, you came to the right place.

In this article, we will discuss if you can DJ with a Chromebook.

For those of you who don’t know, a Chromebook is a budget-friendly alternative to Mac or Windows laptops.

It is not considered a laptop, but it is great for reading emails, browsing the internet, and other basic functions.

It runs on Chrome OS, meaning Windows and Mac software will not run on it.

DJ Equipment

Nowadays, DJing is way more accessible, and you can DJ with just a laptop and DJ controller, which is significantly cheaper and more portable than the hardware that DJs used back in the day.

There are still a number of DJs that use vinyl, but as a beginner, you can start with the basic gear which are:

  • A laptop
  • DJ controller
  • DJ software

Once you get the essential DJ equipment for modern DJing, you can start practicing and soon play live sets.

A lot of people are asking what kind of laptop is the best for DJing.

Well, to give you a straight answer; the best laptop for DJing should have at least a dual-core processor and 8GB of RAM.

With those specs, you will be able to run DJ software without too many issues.

Based on my curiosity, I also did research if you can run DJ software on cheap laptops or a Chromebook.

Can you DJ with a Chromebook - what specs does the chromebook need to run dj software programs and apps

The short answer is; it depends.

There are no DJ apps for Chrome OS, but there is a workaround.

You can try to install a different OS using ChrUbuntu; a system built for Chromebooks to boot a different OS.

So, it is possible, but it will not be the same as using a laptop with slightly higher specs.

If you don’t have any problems with installing a different OS and DJ software on your Chromebook, you will still encounter problems once you use a DJ controller, and I honestly don’t think it’s worth all the fuss.

My Opinion

why you shouldn't dj with a chromebook - my opinion

DJing on a Chromebook would probably be the most impractical way to DJ.

If you are on a tight budget, there are some cheap or second-hand laptops you can buy on Craigslist that are much better-equipped for the task.

In fact, an iPad or iPhone will definitely do you better.

A Chromebook is not designed for DJing, so if you really want to learn how to DJ, it is better to get a Mac or Windows laptop instead.

It is not impossible to DJ on a Chromebook, but I don’t think you are going to enjoy it anyway.

Plus, not all DJ controllers work on a Chromebook, and I am pretty sure you will get more frustrated than actually enjoy DJing.

Chromebooks, however, are excellent for what they are designed to do, and there is no denying it.
